DWD Scholars 2006-2007

Filipinos put a lot of importance in college education. It is the foremost priority of Filipino parents to give their children the best education they can. In fact, the Philippines has one of the highest level of literacy among Asian countries not to mention the number of college graduates. But many Filipinos are below poverty line that majority could not afford to go to school what more, to college.

The reality prompted DWD to grant scholarships to indigent but deserving young people whose thirst to learn could not be sustained by their parents’ finances. There is nothing sadder than to waste a good mind. Last 2003, through Board Resolution No. ____, DWD Scholarship program was created.

At first there were thirteen (13) scholars on the 1st batch. It grew more than doubled in the next three years. At present, twenty-nine (29) scholars are enjoying the program.

Qualified applicants must be resident of Dasmariñas as certified by his respective Barangay Chairman; his parents must be registered voters of Dasmariñas as evidence by Comelec Voter’s Registration; his parents / guardian must be registered DWD concessionaire; combined gross income of both parents should not exceed P200,000.00 annually; and he should have a general average of 85% or higher. Additional requirements like certificate of good moral character from the school he graduated, high school report card or Form 138 and College Admission Slip must be presented. With these requirements met, they would have to pass an interview by DWD Officials (General Manager and/or Members of the Board) to determine if the applicant’s acceptance for the program.

All DWD scholars are enrolled at the Technological University of the Philippines – Cavite (TUP-C). Their courses are Civil Engineering Technology, Electronics and Engineering Technology and Industrial Education majoring in different skills.TUP is a state university comprising of four campuses: Manila, Taguig, Cavite and Visayas. The University also has a specialized unit which is the Integrated Research and training Center. TUP students are known in the fields of architecture, engineering, engineering technology, industrial education and science.
For the past two years DWD spent more than Php 1.2M for its scholars (Php 639,333.71 – 2004, Php 654,840.12 – 2005) for their tuition fees, books, materials for projects and weekly stipends or “baon/pamasahe”. Graduating scholars are also accepted by DWD as OJT Trainees and eventually, they are given a chance to be part of DWD if they so choose.

DWD accepts graduating students from the many colleges and universities operating at Dasmariñas for their On-the-Job Training (O.J.T.) school requirement. Their tasks are the same as the employees. A sum of Php 100.00 per day or Php 2000.00 to Php 2,500.00 a month, are given as allowance.

Last March 2006, DWD is very proud to have four (4) scholars who have completed their college education. They are Marxzed Aguilar (Civil Engineering Technology); Renel Louie Laynesa, Jessel Ann Mercado and Raymond Saramines (Electronics and Engineering Technology).
DWD believes that it owes its growth and success from the support and patronage of the residents of Dasmariñas. All our socio economic assistances, improvements and Scholarship programs are some ways of giving it back to the community.

Other education related projects are: donations of computers

to public schools and libraries; financial assistance (more than Php 200,000.00) to the educational needs of the community as requested by principals and/or administrators of public schools within Dasmariñas; P1.0M was contributed in the construction of the public library of the Municipal Government, one of the largest in the Philippines.
In the coming years, DWD aims to accept more aspiring students and help them achieve their dreams. Education is the key that allows people to move up in the world, seek better jobs, and ultimately succeed fully in life. Education is very important, and no one should be deprived of it.
